Cheap and easy DIY catering ideas needed!

Options
Hi all,

My future hubby and I are on an extremely tight budget and need to keep our spending to a minimum. We've decided to buy drinks via glitches etc and stock up before the big day (May 2015). We are hiring a lovely hall but need catering ideas keeping in kind that I don't mind cooking and preparing before the big day but really would like to take it easy on the day itself and the previous one too!

Any ideas ?

  • Platters of cold meats/smoked salmon, big bowls of salads (pasta/potato salad, greek salads), perhaps a big cheese board with lots of different crackers/grapes/chutneys to go with them, fruit platters, what about a whole poached salmon from somewhere like Costco? I am not sure how many days in advance that can be prepared but refrigerated it should be OK? Lots of fresh bread to go with.... Or perhaps you could do a big high tea with lots of mismatched plates and tea cups/pots from charity shops? Lots of homemade cakes, scones, jam, etc. ?
