Thanks everyone for replying. She is 54, a postgrad and experience in marketing, sales and IT (not a techy) projects. Worked in engineering, construction and IT.She has had her cv independently checked and told it is very good.

She lives in north west and recruitment agencies are inviting her for jobs she is not experienced enough to do in London (at ridiculous salaries for up here) but her apps for jobs in north west are generating nothing.

She is going to look at the London roles but having recovered from the cancer and having to maintain her home and bills here and down in London will be a massive strain -physically and mentally.

The nmw applications are done on a skills based, less named qualifications, name the employer and not mention the role type cv.

On application forms, she has little choice but put everything in and they all show her age (although she did one on Friday that only asked for 5 years history).

She is going to focus on the NHS and write direct to charities and third sector organisations as well as applying for jobs as they arise on indeed.co.uk and universal jobs database.

    Thanks everyone.

Universities are also a good bet. I worked at one and lots of people were older women. They also liked everyone, even the most junior, to have a degree.

Is her degree in engineering? If so, she could train as a teacher on a one year program and could get funding for it (there are several training options). If she's any good, then she's quids in for quite a time as they want us all to teach until we're about 70 now anyway! (I'm not joking btw, I did a career change to teaching and love it).

I don't put my complete work history on application forms. I do put it as far back as 1990, but only because I was with my last employer from then until 2013. Otherwise I wouldn't go as far back as that.

OK- I worked/work with quite a few people who have their main home somewhere else but do contracting in London and rent a room here for Mon-Fri and go home for the weekends.

Financially it is still wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than if they worked where they live so perhaps it is something to consider really?

    Hi,

Never said thank you. She switched to seeking council and nhs jobs direct and via agencies and found no problem. Temp/short fixed terms but reasonable money. Thank you.

My mum works for Virgin Media, she was early fifties when she started and is now mid fifties.
I think it is quite hard to get in there as you have to pass a couple of tests but she seems to enjoy it... as much as you can a job.
