your company can tell you when to take your holiday if they wish to so allowing you to book half isnt an issue as long as they are giving you the other ones

i presume this 10 days is per year?
have you asked what the repercussions are if you are unavailable on one of these days they want you to do cover?
do the extra hours take you under minimum wage?
The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 5

Yes ten days a year, from April to April. The extra hours don't take us under minimum wage either :/
If we are unavailable and the rota doesn't state that we are unavailable we get disciplined. The only time we can mark as unavailable is when we're either going to a christening/funeral etc.

With 4 on 4 off you should be getting a minimum of 19.6 shift bookable as time off, either, for you by the employer or selectable yourself.

Cover shifts is seperate and is the equivilent of someone normaly Mon-Fri doing a sat every now and then.

To cover 24/7/365 with 12hr 4 on 4 off shifts you need 4.5 people

There are 730 shifts and one person does (45.5 shift cycles 182-20) 162 shifts

So for every 2 people cover needed(8 for all 4 shifts) you need an extra 1 to cover holidays.

with 162 non working days only being able to mark 10 as unavailible is low.

Probable best to get those 10 cover days in early then they can't ask you to do more cover so no need to mark days.
