Getting rid of makeup

I looked at my clinique lose face powder and realised I have had it for 10 years! (because it is loose I tip a bit into a pot and use that so it has never had the brush in it).
I have a whole drawer of make up, loads of the free bonus make up which i have never actually used (maybe tested) but is probably more than 3 years old.
Should it all go in the bin?
Oh, I never use macasra after 3 months and always sharpen eye pencils. Blusher always seems to break up after a month or so, so i am forever buying replacements.

Well. I don't know what anyone else would do but I wouldn't bin it . Don't know how your powder lasted so long , you mustn't use much at all ! If you're going to use your make up , smell it . I had some lipstick and it smelled off and was dry . Foundation also would smell strange and might separate . I'm sure I use mascara more than 3 months with no problems , eye liner too . I use a lipstick as a blusher , works fine . Someone else will probably tell you to bin it but see what it's like first .0

I bin mascara regularly and, like you, sharpen eye pencils. Other than that I go by how the product looks and smells. I have frequently read that you should chuck eyeshadow after six months! Do cosmetic companies seriously expect that someone is going to throw away one of those large expensive palettes after six months! I think the expiry dates are nonsense, especially on stuff like shower gel etc.0

I didn't know shower gel had an expiry date! There is a ton of that left to. I don't really have a very good sense of smell so I can't tell by that.

Any product which is powder will never go off.
As said liquid products will so go by smell and texture.
Mascara, load of rubbish. Use until it dries out or you finish. Unless you have an eye infection then you throw it out.
How are you breaking blushers???? I have loads years old and never broke. You do not need to carry them around in your bag, just apply in the morning and that should be it.0 -
I'm with Donna on this one, if you have no infections, use clean hands and wash your applicators from time to time then make up should be fine for ages. Change of texture as well as smell should be a giveaway if things have gone off. Keep the necks of bottles and jars clean and working well (wipe with tissue) to exclude air and most things should be good for years, the exception being some more natural products as they don't use the same level of/any preservatives. Also don't store products near to heat source or sunny window. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0

My pot of Clinique powder is 9 years old. I only use powder when I am doing a full, posh makeup that I need to last. That's rare now that I'm retired.
If you don't pump sir into your mascara it should be fine.
My Clinique foundation has separated, but I give it a good shake before using.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

As some have said before me, you can pretty much ignore those expiery dates. It`s all just a ploy from companies to make you chuck it and go and buy new make up, more money for them. All things powdery (eyeshadow, blush, facepowder) should last years, maybe even decades if you keep it clean and in a dark, dry space. Lipsticks last really long too, I have lipsticks from when I first started using them which are about 10 years old and they are fine. Mascara, I always use until theyre dry/empty. Foundation, as others have said, if it seperates it´s probably off.0

The EU made the companies put a use by date on all products. And the list of ingredients, some companies did not want to do this but lost the court case. Trouble is its just a random 6,12,18 or 24 months, so not really a proper date. It should for this have date manufactured and the last date it should be used by.
Example:
Date Made 30/6/14
Use By 30/12/14
How long has the product sat on the counter, in the factory before you bought and started using????
Marks and Spencer do put proper dates on their skincare.0 -
I go by smell; if it smells fine, it is fine. Liquids go off quickly, and oils. And you shouldn't keep mascaras too long. Powders last ages though, so I'd say 3 years is nothing!0

I have shower gels which have six months on them! I don't think I have ever had a shower gel go off.0
