50 pound overdraft has turned into 650 and now getting DCA threatening legal action

Hi! Please please help!
So a year ago I changed my bank. Santander to Lloyds. I was on 0 pounds in my Santander but didn't actually ever close the account. Anyway a charge must have been taken out of the account for a previous month giving me a minus balance, and then since they charge 80 pounds per 50 pounds overdrawn (30 admin fee and 10 pounds per day or something like that) they obviously kept stacking up the charges.
I visit my parents house after a year of being away to be greeted by a pile of letters from a debt collection company called Moorcroft demanding 650 pounds or they will take legal action! Worse still they have been calling my parents loads at home and won't give up even when she says i don't live there any more, they just slam the phone down on her without saying anything and then try again the next day. I rang Santander horrified but they said it's not their problem any more now they've passed on the debt! I don't have any money and I can't pay and also don't WANT to pay a debt that is purely from charges alone and more than likely just came from the month before when I went 5 pounds overdrawn for more than a day. What do I DO?!!

i would say the best thing to do is to write to moorcroft saying you dispute the amount owed, then write to santander and expain the situation give them opportunity to rectify the charges, if you get no joy write again telling them these were unfair charges and you will take it to the ombudsman as you had no idea these of owing these charges, not sure if it will do much good but will buy you some time with moorcroft, if you do end up paying it back to moorcroft pay them a £1 a month :-)goal for 2014....i will manage money better ..must resist shopping..............:A0

Yes, agree with the above, written complaint to the bank stating that you are in "financial difficulty" and ask for charges to be waived, emphasize the fact you cant afford to pay anything towards this debt with out impacting on your essential living expense's, they have a duty of care to people suffering financial problems, you should get a positive response, always write, never phone, as you just get the monkey, when you need to contact the organ grinder.
Moorcroft are only acting on behalf of there client most likely, you can send them a letter stating the debt is in dispute with the original creditor and "not to bother me again".

MoorCrap's letter wont say they WILL take legal action... It will say they "might" or they "could" or they will "consider".
Write to MoorCrap and say all comms MUST be in writing, however, you are disputing the balance anyway.0 -
Ask Moocroft for a full breakdown of the account as a starting point.
Santander cannot abdicate responsibility for this, especially as it is only a year!
Write to santander, full written complaint, telling them that there actions are wrong and unjustified. Not only the charges but selling the alleged debt and now saying it's nothing to do with them.
