You have a bit of a mess with your original creditors and balances now.

Personally I am quite cynical about the debt collection industry and would have no problem paying nothing for now. I would wait and see what crawls out of the woodwork and deal with each one that pops up with a prove it letter or CCA request.

If you are less cynical you should contact one of the debt charities (linked in my sig) for help.

You might also want to see what is on your credit file. I use Noddle which has an online service which is free and uses Callcredit's data. Equifax and Experian are the other two. You can request a copy of your file from all 3 via letter which costs £2 each. This will give you the creditors with defaults less than 6 years old and the balances. http://ico.org.uk/for_the_public/topic_specific_guides/credit

Personally I would get my credit file(s) and store them somewhere safe while I wait for them to pop up. Some will not bother if you are lucky.
  • Hi Lensman, thanks for the reply.
Like I say my Experian credit report was fine, nothing too untoward on there which I don't really understand. Could Noddle and Equifax reveal something different? I'll have a look tomorrow.
I think at the moment I will just sit and wait...I don't really want to stir up a hornets nest. What are the chances that those creditors that do remain give up the ghost? I very much doubt it but I will be on here asking for advice when it happens!

Different creditors report to different credit reference agencies. Some report to 1, while others report to all 3. I don't know why as it seems a silly system to me.

I had been paying a company called Churchwood Financial since around 2006. It was in 2004 that I started getting in to a mess. In total I had debts of around 12k, loans from HSBC, Egg Credit card, and a couple of store cards.

Most of the debts were probably marked as defaulted on your credit report WELL OVER 6 years ago then, in which case they would not now show on credit reports.

  • But will whatever happens in the next few weeks/months (my creditors not being paid) affect this credit report in the future?

For accounts that have dropped off because the default was over 6 years old, there should never gain be anything recorded on your credit report about them. No mater what you pay or don't. One they are gone they are gone for ever, completely.

Only way the could ever cause an impact now is if a separate CCJ is obtained on them, as that is a different type of entry on a different section of your report.
