How did you find your job?

I've looked everywhere, but nothing. Paper, job centre (I'm going to go back after work) and I've signed up with recruitment agencies. I've not heard anything back from any of the agencies, but one. I have loads of transferable skills, but it doesn't seem like anyone sees those. Where do you go when you can't find employment?

what kind of job are you looking for? what kind of company do you want to work for? How far would you travel?
Whenever we are looking to hire someone (and it's not too specialist a role) our first port of call is always speculative applications - people who just send in cvs and letters to us.
Our next avenue would be does anyone in the organisation know someone looking for work?
third would be agency/jobcentre and fourth going to press.
So by making speculative applications and telling as many people as possible that you're looking you are greatly increasing your chances. none of your friends might know of any opportunities but their contacts might. widen the net.

I found mine on www.jobs.ac.uk because I knew I wanted to work in the public sector. www.jobsgopublic.co.uk offers public sector jobs as well.
If you want to work for a large corporate organisation ie Marks&Spencers, then look for their website which will probably have a link to job opportunities. If you want to work for a large public body ie the NHS, then again I suggest searching there directly as they are unlikely to advertise through agencies.
Sorry that's a bit vague, if you say what sort of work you do and roughly what industry you'd like to work in I'm sure someone will have more specific suggestion.0 -
I want to use the office skills I picked up to work in an office.0

Have you tried registering your CV on line? This may do some of the work for you.
There is a company called CV Match which matches jobs to CV's and vice versa. You upload your CV and indicate what sort of jobs you are looking for and in which demographic area. Its either CVMATCH.NET or cvmatch.co.uk.
It then searches and finds available jobs that have been uploaded by employers. You get an email indicating these jobs and its upto you to decide if you want to respond. Responding is simple - ou click a button and an email containing some of your details is sent to the prospective employer. They then contact you for an interview date.
Als have a look at Monster.co.uk for jobs there.Dirty Cash- DEBT BATTLER:mad:0 -

In the past I've walked up and down industrial estates and business parks knocking on every door that I came across.
Do people consider themselves above such things nowadays?0 -
Most of the jobs I've applied for have been advertised in the local paper. the one I'm in now (charity / voluntary sector) usually advertises in the Big Issue, and always on the local Council for Voluntary Services website.Signature removed for peace of mind0
