  • They should be able to do upto 16 hours and it wont affect your benefit, but do declare it with JCP, if they find out they have worked and not told them they can come down hard on them

Personally I would speak to JCP to find out where I stand

It will affect your benefit, you can work up to 16 hours but anything you earn will be deducted from your JSA, minus a small disregard (£5??).
    :p
  • I did not know that they deducted it from your benefits, You learn something new everyday

Of course they will deduct it. If they didn't they would pay you the total money earned and benefits all the time.

Yes, you get to keep a whole £5!!!! Doesn't even cover the cost of getting there most of the time. Honnesly, they wonder why you are "better off on benefits" it's because working part time isn't worth it financially! Yes, in the long run it's experience / reference etc etc etc, but what you keep before they deduct it from your benefits. Please also note that if you work less than 16hr or don't earn enough to pay national insurance credits, then you will still have to jump through all the same hoops as someone not working at all, and get zero credit for actually doing some work and trying to better yourself

I think I will let them know, no point in working 12 hour shift for a £5

no incentive to work really is there, (I work f/t by the way),

one more question if you only have a day of work, then any money you would get (less the £5) will be taken off your JSA?

they spent £15 getting some trousers and a shirt, so in essence they will do 12 hours and be £10 worse off?

    the world is mad :-(

The incentive is that it may lead to more work. He isn't going to be offered more if he turns this down, that shows a very poor attitude towards work.

The clothes he bought will be worn for future work if he makes a good impression, so far from a waste.

Think of it as an investment, might only get £5 from it but he wont know what the future will hold, if he turns up on time, shows he can do the job/show promise then could lead to more work, if it doesnt then use it as an experience. The shirt, trousers etc he bought can be used in the future so wont need to buy anymore.

it is a one off bar job for an event, I think it is a bit tough to expect a 19 year old to do 12 hours and be worse off.

The shirt is specific colour (black) and unlikely to be used again unless going to a funeral lol

I totally agree in the work ethics, but I am not sure a 19 will understand that and work 12 hours and be down a £10

BTW the job was not from job centre it is one I found for them and now I wish I hadn't :-(
