Sneaky tips to fox anti-OS husband

Some men will only learn when they notice a problem with the bank balance ............................. and they frequently need some kind of 'goal' to envisage for a result of having to be frugal.
You may need to work out what kind of financial carrot to dangle in front of Mr Codemonkey for him to come-to-heel.
Good Luck with getting YOURS 'cash-trained'
.
Errr... I'm a man, and I've been teaching my partner to ignore dates on tins and certain jars and containers. (Although she was already well-trained to sniff out the stuff in the supermarkets with the furthest-away dates, oddly enough!)
Not sure about the need for your sexist comment, to be honest.Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.
Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -

awwww sorry, PenguinJim - didn't mean to cause offense, honestly
.
I DID say 'some men' - meaning 'not all men'.
Incidentally where the heck where you hiding yourself when I was in the market for a frugal fella?
Would have been great to have found one 'ready-trained' instead of having to 'money-train' my own . 0 -
If you bought less stuff and used it up quicker .... he'd not have stuff to think about throwing out!
You can't change his behaviour, but you can change yours.0 -

I was most likely going through the reduced-to-clear food in the supermarket!
Men are people too, y'know.

I can't speak for the OP, but when good food is discounted in the supermarket, I tend to stock up. At the moment we have a few KG of crackers stacked up against a wall! :beer:PasturesNew wrote: »If you bought less stuff and used it up quicker .... he'd not have stuff to think about throwing out!

Not really got any helpful suggestions but my lads do this also and it annoys the hell out of me!
For example, one of them will get a punnet of tomatoes out of the fridge (our fridge seems to keeps veg fresh for ages anyway) and say 'oh I can't use these, they went off 2 days ago' looking at the BBD. 'Are they mouldy, extra squishy or really wrinkly?' 'No, they look fine' 'That's because they bloody are fine, they're tomatoes, what are they going to do to you?' Grrrr, you have my sympathy!!Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0 -
In among my fairly OS kitchen training was decanting pretty much everything mostly into coffee jars as they line up so much neater than packets, with just the name taped on the outside, if that. Also as PasturesNew suggests can you try to change your buying habits so less stuff goes out of date (though there is no way I would get through things like baking soda in time, mine is over a decade past.)
Could you have places in the cupboards and fridge for him to put out of date stuff for you to check before it is binned or eat yourself without feeding to him if that is what he dislikes? But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

My OH is a bit tedious about the date thing too, but he`s so CBA about actually cooking or shopping he has generally just let me get on with it, and now I can just say - well we ate X or Y and no ill effects, were there? I do pop stuff in the freezerif it`s not going to get used by its date, so when it`s a few days past I can say it`s been in the freezer for a bit but we`re going to use it now.... and glass storage jars for dry goods, deffo.0

My OH's son's a thrower too! He threw a whole lettuce out once, cos it had reached it's sell by date, and OH fished it out of the bin, still in it's original wrapper and it kept fresh in the fridge for another week. Other things that we missed rescuing in the last month were: 4 bananas that were starting to speckle; a slab of cheddar; a half jar of chutney that had been open for 3 weeks (when the label said 6 weeks would be fine) and a 2 pint bottle of milk that was chucked on the day the label said "use by" (and was to be used in a rice pudding that evening!!!) The above are what we NOTICED have disappeared. There's probably a whole list of other stuff that grew legs and chucked itself in the bin

I'd be giving him a bill for the wastage! he might be less keen to throw out your food if he has to pay for it.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
