My brother has been clearing 30 years worth of crap out of the loft and found some little photos that my great aunt took in the 20s, 30s and one from 1918. Definitely no mistaking where I come from, I look a lot like my great grandparents! Does anyone know of a way to upload them without using a scanner as mine is on the fritz? Was thinking about taking photos of them, but I don't think it will do them justice as a few are quite faded.

fleabay is great for picking up cheap scanners, if you go for the collection-only option. That's where I've got mine from, in the past; never paid more than £2.30, and the current one is also a printer too.

Taking pics of photos is tricky but not impossible. Put the originals on a flat surface, under glass (picture glass if you can get it, as it's non-reflective - DIY places and builders' merchants often stock it, and may have a little off-cut piece you can buy for pennies). Put the camera on a tripod, and shoot downwards, preferably in natural light (artificial lights give either an orange-y tinge if they're incandescant bulbs, or blue tinge if fluorescent). Don't use the flash. You're basically using a rostrum camera set-up, like they have in the TV industry, so you may know someone who knows someone ... you get the idea.

For post-processing, to improve contrast, colour correction, retouching etc, try Paint.Net software, free for PCs

It's similar to Photoshop, if you've ever used that.
Or XnView, for more simple image processing

which may be enough for what you want.
