Primers - what's good ?

Options
Having not worn makeup for ten years, I've come back to it with a new philosophy and new products. It seems to me, that it starts with treating skin with care, keeping it well fed with everything it needs, clean and hydrated.

Then next, IMO, comes great primers and foundations because it's like preparing a canvas before painting the picture.

So does anyone know anything about these, before I start using them ?

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer - from the Selfridges Beauty Box

Eve Lom Flawless Brilliance Primer - full-size freebie from Liberty

Clinique Superprimer Universal Face Primer - freebie from Clinique counter, Debenhams

Kryolan HD Micro Primer

Any other recommendations please ?

The Eve Lom is more waterbased, does not have silcones.

Laura Mercier I used years ago but found the tube went a strange smell quite quickly.

There are different primers for different things. Oily skin, redness, giving a glow to the skin, all will help your foundation stay on longer.

I am using Prescriptives at the moment, though the company is gone now. After that moving on to the Eve Lom which I had samples of. Hourglass is lovely but expensive its a mineral primer.

Just try each one and see which one you like best from the selection you have.

Smashbox Primers get really good revies, but I haven't tried them yet. However, Wayne Goss has just realised a Youtube video on why he hates primers. I haven't watched it yet so I'm intrigued!

I get more success out of using silicone based primers. If your going to go for water based primers you might as well just slap any old moisturiser on, well that's what I think anyway. However, I do find that i need to be even more careful taking off makeup at the end of the day or I get spots. The silicon sits in my open pores.

I believe that Lanacane Anti-Chaff gel is a well known dupe for the Smashbox primer and its a quarter of the price.

I love benefit porefessional too, although I've got a no 7 one atm, and I don't think it's too good.
Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE :)

I use the bare minerals primer, its light and leaves your skin feeling pearly soft. I also use an urban decay b6 vitamin spray. You can spritz it on before or on top of your make up and it just keeps your skin looking and feeling fresh. I have combination skin that can be sensitive to make up and this spray is such a miracle product

Mac Primer is good for putting underneath foundation but can be a bit shiny/glittery! But lovely feeling.

Depends on what skin type you have and what skin concerns. There are tons of primers on the market but they all aimed at different age groups, budgets and skin types/ complaints.

I have dry skin and find a good moisturiser is better than sillicon heavy primers. However on a more oily or less smooth base they are a must. I do use Mac's strobe as a primer as its full of vitamins and other skin kind things and hydrating and also love the Laura Mercier Radiance Primer (its just heavenly). So i'd suggest them for a more dry/normal skin or even Ilamasqua hydra-veil.

For oily skin smashbox and benefit porefessional are better good.

Thanks for all the recommendations, going to put them on my What's In My Handbag wish list.

Of the ones I have, I tried the Kryolan HD Micro Primer 30ml £22 today.

It doesn't contain actual silicone but does contain something which could be a close relie plus hydrolysed silk among other things. No paraben though. A tiny amount goes a long way, very easy to put on, felt very silky. Can be used without makeup on top to minimise pores and lines or with makeup.

It lasted a good eight hours and OH said he could definitely see a difference.. and if a man can..

Tomorrow - Eve Lom Flawless Brilliance Primer
