Dishwasher won't open

 When we went to open the dishwasher this morning, the door simply won't open. (Ariston LS603) We've tried again this eveing and still can't manage it. Can anybody please tell me how to get it open - preferably without breaking the door?

Thanks
S

We've had a look at that site now (thanks!) but it is for a washing machine and this is a dishwasher. We've taken the top off the machine, as suggested but there is nowhere to put your hand down so as to reach the handle from the inside.....

    Our dishes are inside.... grrr

It'll be the door lock that's stuck Sallygirl and sometimes the only way to open it is to break them, but I can't get access to any technical on that model, typical Indesit, so I can't help too much.

There will be a catch in the door and a metal "hoop" normally that the catch will latch onto. The problem is liable to be the latch in the door has broken internally and isn't unlatching. If you see what I mean.

Thanks for your help. Still can't get it open after much trying. Guess we'll have to break it open.

Then we'll have to decide whether or not to replace it - and what with.
    More decisions!
    But thanks anyway.

If you take the lid off after making sure the power is off you may see what looks like a hoop of wire at the front in the centre. If you can loosen or remove it you may be able to get the door open.

Have now forced it open. It was a plastic hoop not metal and yes, the latch is broken.

So now we need a new one. We've decided that as we both work fulltime that we'd better buy a new one. We are spoilt for choice on the market as there are far too many dishwashers to choose from. Anyone got any recommendations? Or any 'don't touch these with a bargepole' advice?

Thanks to those above who helped.

I have had my zanussi for 15 years and no problems.

If it was to break I would look at a bosch but one that still gave me great flexability. Low temperature option, short wash, economy setting etc

    Hi Sallygirl,

I've not written a buying guide yet for dishwashers, I will get to it though. ;)

Depends what you want, do you want cheap and will last a few years, cheap and won't see three years out or will last for a good number of years?

    Place settings? Wash performance, noise?

Zanussi isn't the same company it was 15 years ago, I know as 15 years ago I was doing 12000 service calls a year for them as a major service agent, they are now Electrolux. ;)

De Dietrich was Brandt, French, then a bunch of Italian financiers, then an Israeli company known as Elco Brandt and is not owned by Fagor, a Spanish company. The bulk of the products are no Fagor so far as I am aware. Spares are stupidly expensive and, 'cause no-one likes them, service can be extremely expensive as well.

The Bosch stuff is okay, but I'm not a huge fan of BSH in all honesty and, until you go up the price range, you get a Spanish "Balay" built machine. Smoke and mirrors, a German name doesn't mean it's German.

In general terms and, trust me I've researched this massively as we wanted to introduce a mid-range dishwasher, the cheap stuff is just utter garbage. The mid-priced stuff there's little to choose between them and the high end stuff, well there's Miele until I get my own one later this year.
