    I can only speak for the South East, particularly Brighton and West Sussex. Rents are extraordinary as a lot of "London money" is in the area as well as people who can't afford to live in London.

    With an economy which is more spread you don't get these "hot spots" in entire areas, yes, cities are expensive but large parts where there is still work are affordable.

    On the other hand it obviously makes the parts further away cheaper but that doesn't help much if there isn't any work.

    One German example - my grandmother lives in a town with about 80 000 inhabitants. Central to some large cities (Cologne is just under 2 hours by car, Düsseldorf about the same, Dortmund about 30 minutes). Good connectivity by train, road network, good public transport, good schools - and a large car, metal and electrics industry. Good pay in the area as well. Now, there's so many of those areas around that it doesn't impact on housing prices.
