Apparently I've Applied For A 123 Card?

Got a letter in the post yesterday from Santander turning me down for their 123 credit card.

But here's the thing, I've never applied for one!!!

I rang them and they were very apologetic saying someones obviously applied in my name but they couldn't provide any information because of data protection and all that - to them it looks as if I have applied and thats all they are prepared to say other than it was an internet application.

Now I'm not panicking or wearing a tinfoil hat, but I'm trying to work it out if it would have any affect on my credit worthiness going forwards? I know to ignore the score, but its another search on my file so do I try to argue the toss with Santander to get them to remove the search as they've not technically done anything wrong - it looks as if I have applied for one of their cards in simple terms.

One credit search isn't a big deal. And, IIRC, is remains in the file for 1 year and is normally ignored by lenders after ~6 months.
  • I'd be more concerned that someone was using my details, to apply for a CC.

This one has been refused, but future applications might not be.

Nonsense. It's your data that's been used. Who are they trying to protect?

I'd at least check Experian for recent searches in addition to this - just in case it is something dodgy..probably won't be..but best to check..
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.
