Anyone had experience of teachers building society?

My husband and I are looking to buy our first house but he is about to qualify as a teacher and will start a one year fixed term contract in September as a Newly Qualified Teacher. I assume it will be difficult/impossible for us to get a mortgage from most lenders while he does not have a permanent contract, but teachers building society say on their website that they are able to lend to NQTs on fixed term contracts.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience of getting a mortgage with them? Also, do brokers deal with them or do we have to go direct?
Thanks!

  • I had an agreement in principle from them pre the new rules, they were nice enough on the phone and it all seemed fine. Post new rules we've gone with a broker who said he hasn't dealt with them. Call them up, they were easy to get through to and will answer any questions you have.
  • Hi, I was just wondering if you had any luck with the mortgage as I'm in a similar position and have just stumbled upon teachers building society myself. Also would it be better just to go through a mortgage broker because looking at the teachers bs it looks like there are some hefty fees,

    Cheers

They are a decent lender if a little slow. They do specialise in teachers but a whole of market broker would be able to tell you if their offering is the best one available to you.
