I suppose it's only 50p. I've learned my lesson, I just won't be going back to that shop. Thanks for all replies.

Why not go back there, but make sure you have cash with you?

Ok, so it may be legal, but I still can't get over it! I always use my card and I've never been charged. I've heard of being charged for using credit cards, but never Switch. I suppose it's only 50p. I've learned my lesson, I just won't be going back to that shop. Thanks for all replies.

Why don't you want to go back, just because you've been charged you? At least you was notified of the charge before paying.

Many business banks have offers, but they don't neccessarilty look to review their business banking

There is a difference beween business banking and merchant services - they are different and whatever bank you choose to have your card services with will charge you per transaction. There is not usually a way to negotiate a fee as the are all the same, just as paypal charges a fee on accepting the money. I have not found any bank who will give a deal on business banking other than that that we have which is because we are with the National Market Traders Federation. We put the fee in our postage costs on our website but if someone buys face to face (which is not very often) then we do not but every place will have to incororate the cost somehow. If you spent £2 in the shop and paid by card the retailer would lose any profit they are making. I've worked in a shop and I've seen people paying this and then getting cashback and you have to pay the fee if you give cashback as well and this is why some places have the rule of spending £10 minimum before you can use a card or get cashback. However, you do get charged whether a debit or credit card - a credit card you get charged more for accepting though and tends to be a rate while a debit card is a flat fee. It is the same as with paypal, no matter how much money went through it there is no way they would negotiate a better rate with you as a 'one off' is there.

blue-monkey - some business banks do offer deals on merchant services for a certain amount of transactions or turnover. Of course not every business use this, but for example for restaurants and takeaways, Bank of Scotland had a deal on recently for the use of merchant services

I'm saying banks negotiate, but different banks can offer different pricing. I've seen some banks charge 48p and others banks will charge them 30p for the same transaction

Most of the small local shops here charge 50p if the total comes to less than £10.

Maybe I got lucky then!! I have no monthly minimum charge and I pay less than 30p per transaction. Maybe this is why there was no negotiation and I felt there no need to. I am happy with what they charge me I guess. I stand corrected!!

you can always get your own back by going into one of the bigger stores and buy something for 10p with your card,:D

Why would that be getting your own back? That would just be taking the p!ss out of another business altogether for no reason! It's like saying "Why not just go to another store and use a fake note?"!!
