    Highly UNSUSTAINABLE I'm afraid.
    • No real natural resources that have been developed (We could be fracking but everyone's against that !!)
    • Massive public sector and huge numbers of people reliant on government hand-outs so we'd probably be better becoming a communist state..
    • Completely divided society (Yes we are I'm afraid) so wouldn't hold out much hope on us "working together"
    • A political system that has never worked, never mind not working..
need I go on...... without a "sponsor" we wouldn't have a hope..... maybe we could become District 12 like in the Hunger Games !!

Steep learning curve, a sense of reality, may be just what this place needs.

    Yes. Indeed.

Soon sort the sheep from the goats.

We'd settle out at a lower level - like Slovakia or Serbia.

Unless you count turf and a bit of smoky old lignite, we've never been big on the resources. It didn't stop us before - look at belfast's public buildings from the boom days around 1900. This place had money.

Public sector - good night. It'll be either do something productive or get on a boat.

Divided society- we'd just have to sink or swim , and if we end up completely divided like Cyprus or Bosnia, we'd have to get on with it. Might even be an improvement - Czechoslovakia seems to be doing all right as two countries.

Alaska did it, Hawaii did it, Maybe on his next visit Mr Haass will make us an offer to become the next outlying United State of America. I suppose its all a question of how we feel about flying the star spangled banner on public buildings and in our "yards"???

Alaska and Hawaii had it done on them. No doubt in the spirit of the self evident truth of all men being created equal, provided they're white.

Where would the incentives come for inward investment?
Public service would definitely have to shrink, causing huge unemployment.
Free prescriptions would definitely have to go, an almost certainly poorer NHS would be inevitable, due to lack of funding.
Infrastructure projects (roads, new hospitals etc) would be put on the long finger due to lack of funding.
I think the list is endless.

It is not worth even debating this. It's over.
