Proving income, no P60

Hi all, hope someone can help me figure this out.

I work part time for a small company and receive no payslips or P60. I am essentially paid, in cash, from the petty cash - all above board as it all goes through accounts etc.

My wage is below both the income tax and NI contribution threshold, so as I understand it, the company is doing no wrong here.

However, when applying for anything that requires confirmation of my income, I have no formal documentation - this query has arisen as I wish to apply for college funding. I *think* that a statement of earnings on letterheaded paper will be sufficient, but would be grateful for any input on this.

Thanks in advance.

It is a legal requirement for your employer to provide you with a payslip, showing all the figures, even where they are £0 deducted.
  • I'm sure they'd given me written ones if I asked for them, it's all quite relaxed and informal - but they are not PAYE registered.

You should ask to receive payslips then. Then you would have proof of earnings.

The company is doing wrong. They have no idea what you might earn elsewhere.
How will you NICS credits for pension etc be registered otherwise?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • So if I presented college (or anyone else for that matter, for example for working tax credits) with a years worth of handwritten payslips, would they accept this as sufficient proof of income?

My understanding, and I'll gladly be corrected, is that a company doesn't have to PAYE registered under certain criteria, which they meet. This perhaps does not excuse them from providing me with payslips, however it does mean they can't issue P60.

Edit - as am I under the NI threshold, can NI credits still be obtainable? I understood not, perhaps wrongly.

No, it has to be done correctly.

Thanks Bryan - which brings me back to my original question - since my employers are not PAYE registered.

Are you declaring your income to HMRC? Self assessment form? Are you paying voluntary NICs? How do you expect to get a State pension if nothing is recorded?

No, no, no and I have no clue! Looks like this simple question has raised more issues than I was aware of. I'm guessing I need to look into this further - I wasn't aware that as an employee earning below thresholds that I would have to declare my income independently, which is what I presume you are saying.
