The discount serves as the deposit, we had 11yrs discount so equated to a 29k discount, we do have 1k in savings though to cover solicitors fees though they are only coming out at £645 at the moment.
so far it has been an easy process as far as dealing with the council goes.
I would say start the process, get your forms sent over and see what happns you have nothing to lose, also with house prices rising now is probably a good time to do it.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

How did you get on?
The only people that moan, are the jealous people.0 -
I'm suprised no one has picked up that you only have 1k savings for solicitors etc. I suppose you could use the extra money your trying to get in your mortgage but that is for home improvements etc.
How are you moving? There are always extra costs involved in a house move and can't belive 1k is enough.0 -
I can appreciate why some people do feel jealous though. It is only a selected few that can get discounted right to buy.
I suspect for the majority no would be the answer.
I could be jealous of the people who get to go out and choose the house they want to live in as opposed to just having what you were given.
but I don't, lifes too short for jealousy and bitterness and being upset that someone might have more than me, why can't everyone just be glad for someone else's luck.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

By selected people you actually mean people living in a council house, would the ones feeling jealous have done as we did, started in a council house on a very rough estate, moved several times in order to get onto a nice street, lived with the stigma of being a council tenant.

Most do not get the option of a council house any more and live in private rented with higher rents. They do not get offered a discount to buy. I would feel hard done by in that situation.
as I said before why waste energy feeling bitter, theres always someone in a better or worse position than yourself, if more time was spent feeling grateful for what you have as opposd to what you haven't then the world would be a happier place.
We may not get the mortgage in which case I shall be glad to just have a secure roof over my head.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
Also I must make the point if I should give up the chance to buy my council house because others don't get the chance will the same apply with everything in life, if someone is gifted money for a house should they not use or feel bad about it because others won't get it?
To those you mentioned privately renting I would say get on the housing list wait years as I did then take the first thing offered regardless of location or suitability as I did and hope you get to a place you want to stay.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

Your comparing apples and pears, The point is a select few have been given £ thousands of pounds of taxpayers money , if someone was gifted £thousands by a friend or family member the taxpayer doesn't take a hit and there would be no reason for anyone to object.
Personally I object to the fact that the Social Housing stock is depleted at a time when we need it most. A better solution (if the taxpayer should take a finacial hit) would be to give grants for a deposit to Social Housing tenants to buy a house on the open market. The taxpayer would still pay but at least the house would be kept as Social Housing for someone who needs it. If you were able to buy the house at full market value at least the money could have gone on building another Social Housing unit. This is a good idea when old properties need major updating.
Currently your in a win win situation and the rest of Society loses. Incidently I would also point out currently ,if you buy your Council House and say a few years down the line you get repossessed (God forbid) you have the right to go back on the list and be given another Council House/Social Housing. The system is a complete joke.To those you mentioned privately renting I would say get on the housing list wait years as I did then take the first thing offered regardless of location or suitability as I did and hope you get to a place you want to stay.0
