Seller won't accept return

I bought a used laptop for my son on ebay. It was listed as having Windows installed but when it arrived it had Linux. I already have a Linux laptop and needed a windows one for my son so he can easily use things like netflix.
After trying to contact him I opened a case and he is not replying, I just want to return the laptop. If he doesn't accept the return will I get my money back?

  • If you've opened a SNAD case, the seller has eight days to reply, if s/he doesn't respond, you can escalate it to eBay for a decision and in 99%+ of cases they will find in the favour of the buyer and you be able to return it for a refund.

Do ensure that when you return it, you send it tracked (Royal Mail Special Delivery is probably best for a laptop, as most couriers won't insure them).

If it says in the listing its defo got windows installed, then the item is "not as described" as it does not have this. I'd contact Ebay direct (phone rather than instant messenger as they have a tendency to cut you off half way through) and they'll give you advice regarding sending it back - making sure it's tracked all the way. You should get your money back if there is proof of delivery to the sender.

It might take a wee while (I was scammed by a seller who didn't send a laptop - seller address was a field in the middle of nowhere when I did some checking!). Got my money back from ebay but did take a week or so of bitten nails!

    ^ This.

However, I don't think Royal Mail cover laptops either and it'll be more expensive. So might be best to make sure it's very well packaged and use a courier as you probably won't get your money back on the return postage costs. Best to read all the information on the Royal Mail and courier sites to check what's covered before sending.

No need to phone eBay if a case is open.

Laptops are covered by RM as long as you use the correct postage service for the value. It is couriers who tend not to cover laptops.

The RM site says under prohibited goods,

"Electronic items containing any batteries exceeding 100Wh Including some high performance laptops and power tools."

There's also the thing about batteries.

I seem to remember seeing a thread a while back about laptops and people were saying they weren't covered by anyone so it made sense to send them by the cheapest courier. No idea on the thread title or who started it or anything though lol.

But fair enough. RM with correct service is the better option then to be sure you're covered.
