Mortgage payment horror

Following a spell with my leg in plaster and reduced hours at work, I called my mortgage provider (with whom I have arrears on the account but am paying off an agreed monthly amount on top of my regular payments) to see if a temporary measure could be put in place for a couple of months, while I got myself back into my full earning potential. I am a company director and my earning potential was reduced during my spell off work.
I have previously requested that the mortgage company I am with consolidate my arrears of 14k (this large amount escalating due to my paying off a previous interest only account, accumulating relatively small arrears following divorce which grew with phenomenally large interest charges) on top of the amount owed but my request was refused.
I went through around half an hour on the phone with one of their representatives a couple of days ago who said he would need to refer my request of reduced payments to another department. When I spoke with someone today, they asked me exactly the same questions, despite having this other persons report in front of them. By the way - I was only asking them to reduce the monthly payment by £50.00 for the next 2 months, not an all expenses paid holiday in the Maldives with a chauffeur driven car in a 5* hotel...Anyway after another half an hour on the phone confirming my previous conversation, the outcome was....they would consider reducing my payment if I paid them £8,000 now!!!
I told the other person that her request was so ridiculous it was actually funny. I asked her why an earth they would suggest that when I was struggling and asking to reduce my payments by only £50.00? I also stated what an absolute waste of my time and money paying for both calls to have such an outcome which didn't even amount to common sense!! She said she couldn't answer and said she would have to terminate our conversation...:(

Not much help now but when your back on your feet (no pun intended), you should take a look at income protection. This sort of policy would possibly have helped to avoid you being in this situation.
