Student Loan - paid off but now owe??

Hi,

I need some advice...

I paid my student loan off in a lump sum in 2010 - i immediately received an invoice confirming the balance was zero, another invoice in 2011 confirming the balance was zero, another in 2012 confirming the balance was zero...and then in 2013 (2 and a half years later) a letter saying my balance was £1500.

I rang them to understand why my balance was suddenly £1500 (having paid it off over 2 years before) and they said a mistake was made - they 'suspected' that they received the wrong P60 from my employer (i dont believe they did - i believe the SLC made the mistake).

My question is where do i stand with this, can i refuse to pay, this was their error and i havent provisioned for this debt. If i have a case i could use some advice on the wording of my email / letter to the SLC so any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

Simon

If a balance is still owing, and it's within the last 6 years, you still need to pay it.

Write to them and say you do not agree that you owe any money and ask them to produce a complete statement for your account, showing all credits and debits.

yeah i'd push back at them and say they need to provide evidence that an amount is still owed. if it is id also dispute any interest charges they may have applied in the past 2 years from their mistakes. agree to settle at a discount maybe?

Ask them which tax year the error relates and send a copy of your P60 related to that tax year.
