What To Do In Life

Im a 21 year old - who currently doesn't know what I want to do in my life.
I am currently an admin assistant who started off as an admin apprentice - I thought at the begin I'd thoroughly enjoy admin but now I am finding I don't enjoy it anymore. Whether its' the workplace I am in I just don't know at this point.
I'm at a stage where I'm looking at open university courses but still unsure about what to do.
How did anyone find out what job role they wanted to do in life?

I'm 35 and I still haven't. I reckon you'll find most people will be similar to you and I.0

I work in PR & Marketing, although I am starting a new job and career in a couple of months. It is a big paycut initially, but I think it will be much more enjoyable and make a big difference I hope.
In addition I hope to have a couple of months off in between jobs so I can do at least six weeks travelling, meet new people and see new places.0 -
I'm 29 and in the same position as yourself.
Have you tried doing the Skills and Interests assessment on the National Careers Service website to generate some career options? It didn't really work for me, but some people have been helped by it.0 -
Are there any aspects of your job you do enjoy?
I'm not sure what you do of course, but for example, you could enjoy helping people who visit or phone up and feel satisfied when you've helped them with their query. Or you could hate it when the phone rings, and instead enjoy wading though documents and data getting them all in order.
If you're not sure what you want to do (take it from a recent 30 year old, nobody ever really does), don't try to identify ideal job titles - work on what your skills are, what you enjoy doing, what you don't enjoy doing, what you want to improve, and what you could happily never try to do again, and keep an open mind about what jobs these things could lead to (or at least be able to rule out which roles you don't want to do).
I second the National Careers Service site - try the Skills Check: https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/tools/skillshealthcheck/Pages/default.aspx
Also, try doing some volunteer work if you can, maybe in something you've never thought to do before. Working with young people could inspire you to do a course in community studies for example.0 -

I'd never realised that jobs existed that people loved, and that would pay such good money, and so I set out to do the same.
In the end it was very easy to get into. I read a few books on the business, started reading the FT, bought a suit, and applied.0 -
You are not alone.
I'm 32 and very much like this - nursing/police/nursing/police. I have a new job with people with learning disabilities (support worker) but I need to see where this is going, I feel that this is the area I'd like to stay in but what is the next step?
I've looked at post grad degrees in autism, learning disabilities and learning disability nursing, but there are few nursing courses out there and none near me, plus what can I do with it?Debt slowly coming down.[STRIKE] DRO off credit report July 2015![/STRIKE] credit history getting better!0 -
Im the same OP, just haven't quite found my calling, current job is much better than my last one where I wish I didnt have to get up.0
