Holidays & working in a school

I am thinking of applying for a job in a school which is full time during term time. I have had a look on the website of the council & it states that all employees get at least 24 days holidays, my query is do these days usally include bank holidays or not as these would be during school hols?

(My current job in an office i get 25 days hols but i get the bank hols on top so i actually get 32 days)

    Presume this is a term time only job, so your holidays would be same as school holidays. I have worked for a couple of different councils in schools and the 24 days applies for full time contracts for whole of year.

    The holiday rules for school staff are different and a bit complicated because it all depends on how many hours and weeks you work. As a rule of thumb, you are expected to take your holidays during school breaks and you don't get extra days to take off during term time.
  • I understand that you have to take your holidays are during school holidays but my query was more on what you get paid for not when you take the holidays. IE do you get paid for the 24 days holiday & bank holidays so on a 39 week school year that the job entails, you would be paid for 44/45 weeks or would you just get paid for the 39 weeks?

    I suspect that it will vary from post to post.

    One thing that I discovered was that many LSA posts are only paid for the actual weeks you work so are pro-rata. If you are looking at applying for an LSA job then be warned that they are very popular and their are usually 100s of applicants for each post and they often go to Mum's who already volunteer in the school in question.

    Also, if the post is to support an individual child then the job is only there as long as the child and funding are in place. If the child moves schools or becomes unstatemented, then there is no job.

  • Its a school secretary role, i went to see the school yesterday & the head advised the mum who is covering long term sickness at the moment doesnt want to continue full time which is why they are advertising. Any idea how popular school secretary jobs are?!

    If you are working 39 weeks of the year, you'll get 75% of the benefits - pay, holidays and bank holidays

    Usually this will be calculated as the total and spread over the year. So, for example

    Full time salary = £20,000
    Full time holidays = 24 days
    Full time bank holidays = 10 days

    For 39 weeks you would get

    salary = £15,000
    holidays = 18 days = £986.30
    bank holidays = 7.5 days = £410.96

    = £16,397.26 per year paid in 12 payments of £1366.44 gross per month.

    You would be paid for your holidays as you'd be taking them during school holidays. You wouldn't get any leave to take during term time. Does that make sense?
