Hi there,
ive just aplied for an account in a local builders merchants, ,who i used to be with years ago, but have since finished my house and never used account.
I went in yesterday to reopen it, they gave me forms and i got a phonecall today saying there was outstanding debt of 180 including charges and interest and that it had been passed on to debt collectors in 2008. i have a vague recollection of laughing at it thinking they cant charge me interest on builders merchants accounts and dismissing it. i havnt heard anything since then.
on the call today the woman said they passed it to debt collectors in 08 and they will check with debt collector again to get it sorted.
Have I just rewoken a sleeping giant?
is there a time limit on this?

Well it's unlikely you'll be opening an account with them unless you clear it.
However, the dca now knows where you live and I would be expecting a call if I were you. So you need to decide what, of anything you intend to do.
Pay the debt and resume service with the builders merchant or not pay it and see if it's statute barred but not be able to use that merchant.
Do you know if there is a county court judgement on it? Did the dca take it that far?
For such a small amount, it might be better just getting it paid and done with.I'm Debt Free :j 2/09/2013

The time limit is 6 years. That is 6 years without written acknowledgement from you, or payment. So I would advise checking when in 2008 you last made a payment.
That £180 will be significantly higher now as the debt collection agency will have added its own eye watering charges.0 -

DCA`s don't normally add charges, it depends when the default was 1st registered as to when it may become SB.
You can either settle it, or try another builders merchant
