I have an annual gold card on my Oystercard. I frequently use London Overground. More and more I am seeing ticket inspectors by the exits and on the trains because so many stations have no gates at the exit. There are often police to support the revenue staff. I am curious to know if anyone with a travelcard has had a penalty notice for not having touched in or out even though they are within their allowed zones and so have nothing to pay?
At Tottenham Hale there are often 2 staff members who almost shout at passengers to touch in on the route validator between the overground and tube even though travelcard holders mostly don't need to do so.

I have an annual gold card (Zones 2-5) which I mostly use on DLR and national rail. I'm lazy and only touch in or out if there's a gate in the way (or if I'm going to zone 1). I often only have to touch in/out at one end of my rail journey (usually at the start). For the DLR part there are no gates so I never bother touching in or out. I've been on DLR trains with ticket inspectors several times and no problems...Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

If you have gone outside the zones (or are suspected of doing so, or attempting to do so) you may be given a Penalty Fare (if it was believed to be a mistake) or reported for prosecution (if believed to be deliberate).0 -
If you stay within your zones, there is nothing to pay and no penalty can be applied.

Today the revenue staff have been checking tickets on the trains. I joined the Overground train at Harringay Green Lanes (within my zones 1-3). I didn't touch in at Harringay as I didn't need to. As I walked along the platform, a member of station staff called me back to touch in. I told him that i didn't need to as I had a gold card and got on the train. My ticket was checked again on the train without any problem and, when I got off, a team of about 10 ticket inspectors was waiting. I couldn't be bothered with an argument so I did touch out. However it does irritate me when they assume that everyone who doesn't touch in/out is evading payment. Plenty of us have travelcards. I only make sure I touch in/out if I am going outside my zones and so need to pay something.0 -
They do have the right to check tickets though, so if they are looking for people not touching in/out, they can call you back and ask you to either do so, or present a valid ticket/pass for inspection.0
