For the second year running Sharp Europe is inviting European students to enter the #GetItDownOnPaper competition for a chance to win a paid internship at Sharp’s research and development facilities, Sharp Laboratories of Europe in Oxford.

Scientists at Sharp Laboratories are constantly working on new ideas and technologies that can benefit society. The lab is responsible for cutting edge innovations such as mobile LCD technology, smart cards, DualView, the ‘lab in the palm of your hand’ and many others that push the boundaries of the future and allow for intelligent living.

#GetItDownOnPaper
Following the success of last year’s #GetItDownOnPaper competition in which designer Siobhan Andrews won the internship and created a prototype for her interactive chopping board, Chop-Syc, this year we ask students to submit a concept for the home of the future.

Ian Thompson, Director at the Laboratories, says: “This is an amazing opportunity for someone passionate about science and technology to spend a month in a leading laboratory. The winner will be able to work towards a prototype of their idea that could eventually be put into production.”

He continues, “Last year’s competition was a huge success with the winning concept gaining global media attention. We’re hoping that this year will bring even more innovative ideas that will help predict the home of the future. We wish all entrants the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing the ideas.”

Home of the future
To enter the competition, students simply need to sketch their idea for the home of the future. It might be centralised and automated control of all appliances, voice activated lighting or something that would help with the energy efficiency of a house. They then need to take a photo of the sketch and share it on Twitter with the hashtag #GetItDownOnPaper.

The competition runs from 16th June to 25th July, 2014 and is open to students currently in university education across Europe or those who have recently graduated and are eligible to work in Europe.

The winner will be announced on 1st August 2014 with the one month placement beginning on August 18th.
