remortgage cheque time limited

interested if others have this experience. I re-mortgaged the house some years ago. the solicitors in charge of this contacted me recently saying that they had sent me a cheque following the transaction which I had not cashed (and not received) and so they would be reissuing me a cheque for £130. I was pleased but with the cheque came a letter saying that I had to present it within 14 days from the date on the letter or my money would be given to charity!!!! as we had a been away, the 14 days had expired. I phoned the company and explained and they say they have made a note and that I should go ahead and bank it asap....I cant help wondering 1. why they didn't pay it into my account by BACS- they have the details 2. how many other people have been caught out by this and had their cash given to charity!

1) What would have happened if you had changed bank account?
If it had been a few years, its not uncommon for people to change for various reasons - unhappy customer, incentives with other banks etc.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. hi thanks for response yes point taken but I object to being given a 14 day timelimit to cash the cheque0

I *suspect* that the 14 day limit would not have been reacted on in reality - it was probably more to do with solicitor wanting to incentivise you to bank the cheque rather than putting it to one side for however long. Banking quickly helps the solicitor monitor his cash position properly.0
