Icing nozzles h

Options
Hoping you lovely lot can help. I bake quite a bit and would like to get some icing nozzles for cupcakes. I don't want to waste money on large sets, just a couple, like an open star, closed star and grass effect type nozzle.

Thing is I'm a bit confused about all the brands. I see Wilton seems to be really popular, but is this a fad or are they genuinely good? I'd quite like to have got some uk manufactured nozzles which wilton don't seem to be, but as I'll be using mainly buttercream icing, I don't want fiddly little nozzles that will just get blocked easily.

Anyone got any advise please?

    Eh up :)

To be honest, I have a mixture from Wilton, PME, Savoy, Tala and Lakeland and they're all pretty much the same. The only noticeable difference between them is the type of nozzle; for example I mostly use Wilton's 1M star tip for piping as I find it works best for me. I did find the Tala ones became a little rusty after a couple of years though. I should point out that I mostly bought Wilton ones after visiting the US as they worked out at about 23p each (after some couponing :D).

The grass tip is fiddly to clean so I run it under hot water to get rid of the excess icing. It really depends on what style of piping you want to do really.

    Hope that helps! :)

if you have a Poundland near you then they should stock the Jane Asher range of cookware - including her packs of re-usable icing bags with three nozzles. for a £1!
if not Wilkinsons usually have icing sets at a reasonable price.
edited to say that the jane asher set nozzles are steel ones not plastic and work really well.

If you've got a garlic crusher it does 'grass' really well. This was a tip from our local cake decorating shop!

The Range have a good selection of nozzles, and TK Max have cake decorating supplies for a reasonable price but you do have to rummage through :)

Home Bargains have been doing a range of cake decorating equipment recently. I can't say I notice nozzles specifically, but it might be worth a look. Ditto with the 99p stores.

Personally, I have a couple of Wilton nozzles, some Tala and some PME. I've found the Tala ones tarnish more than going rusty, but this can still discolour white icing. But for buttercream, I've also used the cheapy plastic sets with some success. HTH :)
