over paying council tax, how far back can i reclaim

Hi

I am assisting a friend who has been paying full council tax since 2008, when he should have been in receipt of the 25% discount that Glasgow gives to single occupancy. How far back should I be able to help him claim this?

I only discovered this by accident during a conversation when it came to light, and as he is like most of us (not made of money) any help i can give him with this would be great.

In theory backdating is unlimited but he would need to prove that he was entitled to it.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
