Asda online delivery

Not sure if people already know about this, but I guess being told twice is better than not at all!!
I had a code for free delivery at asda.com, so took advantage of it to save myself some time, what a mistake!!
Don't get me wrong, shopping was delivered fine, (this was Monday), checked my online banking today, and was £72.84 short of what it should be. Asda had debited their money I saw, and was racking my brains, but knew hadn't spent it.
Then I realised that the amount was the same as my estimated total from asda.com! Phoned them and was told that the night before your shopping is to be delivered, they pre authorise your card for the estimated amount. Fair enough, but, if your final total is more than 5% different (there were some unavailable items) their system doesn't recognise it as the same transaction and will put it through separately. So effectively they have your money twice until the pre auth cancels.
Problem is, it can stay valid for up to 10 days, so you can't access that balance in your account. That could leave you in real trouble if you've got bills coming out your available funds might not be enough to cover resulting in bounced dd and charges.
The man I spoke to sorted it very quickly for me, but he said they had loads of these calls every day!!
Anyway, long post, I'm sorry, but it's definately something to be aware of, when money's tight to start with, that's the last thing you need!

I hate Asda food, used Tesco today spent £81 inc delivery but it came down to £65 with vouchers and multibuys etc not bad our usual shop is at Netto for about £55 and this time we had to shop for a birthday party for 30 too!
Thanks for the warning though it does seem a strange way of doing things if the card don't go through don't deliver the shopping no need to do that system!0 -
they do this in hotels too... its not a new thing but in my opinion asda should state that this may happen and thus your account may be short of funds due to the pre auth...0

I've often wondered why my balance is £1 different to the amount available for withdrawal!! Thanks for that!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Wow, that's a pretty sh*tty way of doing business, way to annoy the hell out of your customers! Fair enough taking £1 as a test, but taking the whole amount twice is pretty harsh.
I bought some things online in the HMV sale the other day, stocking up for christmas. I think I bought 10 items in total and instead of processing it all as one payment, they put each item on my card as a separate transaction. By transaction number 4 my bank got suspicious and stopped the payments going through and rang me up to find out what on earth was going on. Was a complete nightmare to sort out.
I know HMV like to parcel things up individually so they'll fit through mail slots, but putting through individual transactions like that is frankly ridiculous! I don't see the point of it, it must cost them money and it annoys their customers. Not best business practice, I won't be using them again.0 -
Hi
Having worked for a bank they hate to do this but can - they can reverse it! I know for a fact barclays can but others can do.
