Solar Panels on garage roof

Options
We have a Comptons single garage (pretty sturdy) and wondered whether it would take a couple of solar panels ?
It has an apex roof and faces E-W
This would be preferential to the main house roof....

The panels don't weigh that much, and if bolted directly to the structure, do not add any significant loads.
    However.
A couple of panels will produce around 500W.

What do you plan to do with this? It is unlikely to be economic to attempt to get this registered under the feed-in-tarrif.

You could try for the higher power panels, but if you are going for standard 250W panels, you would be better off with 6 minimum.

Best bet is to ask a local solar fitter to take a look and quote for a system. They should be able to tell you what you can expect to achieve from the roof space you have, and advise on a course of action.

Thanks - so are there any other regs about height from the ground ?

It's not uncommon for free-standing panels (in an 'energy farm' ) to be just a few inches from the ground.

If your garage roof is pitched, you could continue the roof-line down to the ground, fit panels to whole length and use the space under the roof extension for semi-dry storage.

Are panels a standard size or do they vary ?

The physical size can vary. More efficient panels can be made smaller while still providing the same output power.
