How do I protect my company name?

    Copyright it , get some headed paper and mail it to yourself recorded delivery, when it arrives don't open it , if ever anybody tries to say they had it first simply hand the unopened recorded delivery dated letter to a judge to open

    I didn't think names were a copyright item, unlike logos, letterheads, etc.

    You'd probably need to trade mark it, and then be prepared to spend perhaps £millions enforcing such trade mark if an infringment occurs.

    You may wish to create a limited company in that name too (and keep it dormant if you wish), to prevent anyone else doing so.
