Monday 16th June - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big "stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending. :money:

  • Hello all,

At work today so earning not spending.

Am worried about hubbie as he is still very ill with fever (NEVER gets ill). As he is in bed I'm doing the early morning dog walk and then driving to work (can't fit it in and catch my lift - get up at 5.45 as it is!).

    Today I have/will:

    - check bank accounts and update spreadsheet
    - all meals from home (we are having rubber mince - bolognese last night will become chilli today)
    - make a list of things we need/want to do with our money next month and put it in priority order (this worked really well last month but I am really hoping that I can get my haircut - the dog had his done last month, was in greater need :o)
    - ask sons to help with eBay. Just haven't been able to do this with hubbie out of action. Mind you if I ask them they'll probably expect a cut of the profit......

I'd be interested to know how to make weedkiller Ziggy?

    Best wishes all x

    Morning Monday Savers,
    Today's small positive things:
*Washed hair & let it dry naturally to save energy.
*Rubber ham hock. Cost £2-50. Last night's dinner. Divvied up leftovers to make ham & broccoli pasta bake, pizza & 3 packed lunches. Made stock with ham bone & used that for 3 hefty portions of lentil & tomato soup for freezer. Chucked a parmesan rind in while it was cooking for extra flavour (idea from Nigel Slater).
*Made bread (loaf in BM, 12 rolls & round poppyseed loaf for freezer by hand).
    *Made tomorrow's packed lunch.
*Checked online banking & did a mid-month look at our finances. Am £28 adrift. Annoying as can't see any blip in my accounting. Never mind, we are roughly on track.
*Paid in a cheque & withdrew petty cash for camping trip (I top-sliced this from our June grocery budget, so it's not 'extra' money).
    *Entered a competition.
*Checked Car Maintenance Piggy as Mr f says it's due a service early July.
*Did laundry on timer overnight for cheap wash.
    *All line drying outside.
*Start packing food bag to take camping.
*Finish knitting sock & cast on its twin. I want these finished this week.
*Cut up old duvet cover for the rag bag as it can't really be mended again. Buttons snipped off for button jar.
*Enjoy a lovely free cup of tea courtesy of kind person who sent me some posh teabags! (You know who you are, oh yes you do!)
    *Checked veggie garden for pests/problems.
*Picked homegrown herbs & salad leaves.
*Did tedious money saving job involving cat biscuits.
*Found a Sainbo's voucher for double nectar points on petrol. Stuck it where we will see it so it gets used.
*May do a few surveys if I have time, but feel that knitting for the present box is a more money saving use of my time this week.
That's it for today. Feeling very up for some serious money saving behaviour at the moment. It's Monday....a new week, good time for new starts & renewed 'old' starts. Let's really see if we can cane it with the pence!
    Cheers, f x

Oooh sounds like a top tip - I have all the ingredients to make that. Will give it a go.

We decided to hang on for another 24 hours before calling doc (older son is at home today so he's not on his own - I wouldn't have wanted to leave him). That said I'll see how he is when I get home (leaving work soon)....
  • Hello to all the usuals and newbies!

Not a brilliant day, work seemed like problem after problem (it made the day fly by though). Quick food shopping trip after work while DD spent an hour at Grandma's. Tue shopping bill was higher than I wanted and this sent my mood spiralling. Unfortunately, it didn't improve when I went back to pick up DD and everyone was looking at holiday apartments and trying to talk me into coming too - after all it's only £100 per person plus £250 each for flights. Great - it may as well be a million pounds each, were would I get a thousand pounds plus spending money from? The trouble is, no one knows our level of debt, so they just don't understand.

Oh well, had a chat with DH when he got home and got a big hug and it all seems a bit better now. Before I addressed my debts (all in my name), I didn't share my feelings or issues about lack of money, talking about these things has helped me.

So now I've waffled on, I'd better put today's list on:

    •all meals from stores
•weekly shopping trip done, shouldn't need anything until Sunday now, also picked up the own brand teabags instead of branded, we'll give them a try
•dd at a party tomorrow, birthday card and wrapping paper from my stash
•prepared all packed lunches for tomorrow including refilling my water bottles from the Brita filter
•arranged for DD to be picked up after school later in the week when I'm at a training course, this will save me paying for her to go to after school club
•filled in my child tax credit form (my constant nagging to DH regarding his self employed income has finally paid off)
    •checked bank
    •updated spending diary
    •checked post code lottery

I think that's it, hope my mood improves tomorrow.
