Benefits and Joint Mortgage Application?

My husband has recently been medically retired and his cardiac consultant believes his chances of ever being able to return to work are slim to nil, he is 28.
We are in the middle of applying for PIP (formally DLA) and he has been granted ESA.
We currently have a flat that is on the market as we need to buy somewhere a bit cheaper (first time buyers initiative sees our monthly fees rising by £100 a month each year) and ideally with a garden or usable outside space.
Sadly we are now down an income and although we may be able to get somewhere on just mine, it would have to be another shared ownership and these are currently thin on the ground in our area.
Does anyone know if any of DH benefits can be taken into account when applying for a mortgage? We were going to go with a single mortgage application, but obviously if we could consider a joint, it would raise our options a little.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, sorry to hear about your husband's health - what a dreadful thing to happen so young. Unfortunately, as far as I know mortgage companies will only consider your income and not the benefits your husband will be getting. Why don't you speak to a financial advisor (or even the CAB) to find out your options?
You live in a beautiful area although I know prices aren't cheap around there I hope you are able to find the perfect place quickly. Good luck.

Not certain on specifics as to what will and won't be counted, but in my case they took into account child benefit and widowed parents allowance when working up my affordability calculations so there are some benefits that can be considered.
Hopefully someone who is more knowledgeable in this area will advise in more detail.0
