Glass Jars for Jam Making

Do you make your own jams, pickles and chutneys?
Fed up with buying expensive empty jars from cook shops?
Or putting your preserve in a miss-matched set of old jars?
All the big supermarkets sell some sort of budget jam for under 30p a jar (Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco currently have Lemon Curd at 22p). That's almost a quarter of the price of one empty jar plus lid (sold separately) from Lakeland (85.67p). OK, it's marginally smaller (411gr) than a standard 454g jar, but even this size is only 27p when full of cheap marmalade.
The main downside, of course, is that you will have to dispose of the contents!
12 X 454gr empty jars + lids from Lakeland = £10.28
12 X 454gr jars cheap jam @27p = £3.24.

Do you have a formula for replacing the sugar? (Brilliant idea, by the way)
Do you replace weight of sugar with weight of jam, or slightly more jam than the weight of sugar required in the recipe?0 -
Most Freecycle groups yield plenty of free empty jars. See http://uk.freecycle.org/ for your local group.0
