12 hour shifts?

Hey guys!
I wanted some advice, I am an aesthetic therapist working in London carrying out laser hair removal treatments and these treatments are usually booked in back to back. My rota has recently been changed for July without any notice given to me. I am contracted to work 40 ours per week as a full time member of staff, and it is a mix of 8, 9 and 13 hour shifts. The rota has been changed so that I have 2 13 hour shifts each week, and there is also one occasion where I am to work 8am-9pm then the following day 8am - 7pm.
1) is my manager allowed to change this shift pattern without telling me?
2) am I working too much as I also have a spinal disability which means I get tired and achey and often require breaks in between individual clients which I never get.
My total hours for July will be 163 hours, is this too much?
Please reply ASAP
Thank you

You can try and hit them with the law.. check out gov.uk
I currently work 10 hour days + overtime so June will see me around hit 240 I wouldn't like to complain about this, though this will stop when the warehouse I am in brings in automated scanning set to reduce our 'call centre' workflow so I'm trying to make hay while the sun shines whilst I don't really like it. Devils advocate when there is no work what do you think happens?
'Overworking' did afford me my annual leave which would have ordinarily been denied said the boss, so I guess it was a plus that I had been prepared to put the hours in, in the end
See you can make it work for you
We currently don't get a break other then 30 minutes lunch which isn't timed ie you must work so many hours to be eligible to go at this time, it's got to the point, aside from my rents keep asking if I am having problems.. I won't mind the big pay cheque end of month nor do I mind it gets me a tick for the right things that I would like, as I'll never change the method in the madness, still no rest for the wicked I guess!0 -

163 for a month when you work 40 hours per week sounds about right, what is the problem here?
Does your employer know about the spinal disability? It could well be covered as a disability and so reasonable adjustments would need to be made by your employer
What does your contract say about actual hours worked, for instance does it just say 40 hours or specify them. If the former then there may be little you can do, if not covered as a disability.

The minimum rest period between shifts is 13 hours, so, while it's not very nice at all, your employer isn't breaking the law in starting your next shift at 8am after your previous one ended at 9pm.0

Now that's where I thought employer is breaking rules as only 11 hours between stopping at 9.00pm and starting at 8.00am.0

it's 11 hours between shifts legally - so employer is in the clear0

The working time directive only requires 11 hours rest so they are compliant.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

Hi guys thanks for getting back to me, I have mentioned the problems with my back to my manager who logged our every word in her notebook, she did say that she has changed it all around so that she can have a day off. I did say I wasn't happy that she hadn't asked to move my shifts or Atleast notified me that she had changed them, but going into work this weekend I have noticed that she has put in another 13 hour shift without asking or notifying me. I have also calculated the hours she has shifted me for in July and it totals 169 which as far as I'm aware is more than my 40 hours a week contracted hours.
I'm not really sure how to mention this to her as the last time I mentioned it, she got quite shirty with me, and when I asked during the week if I could have my break slightly later ( starting at 12 and I had been allocated my break at 1, should mean I still had another 8 hours without a break) she snapped at me.

You need to go beyond "mentioning" and your issues should be recorded somewhere more formal than her notebook.
Request she refers you to occupational health or if she refuses consider making a self referral (assuming an occupational health provider is available).Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0
