Hi
My son is 5 and is going through another hungry phase. He doesn't notice when he's busy playing but if he's bored well, we all get to know about it
I am giving him slightly bigger portions at mealtimes, plus doing a small plate of bread and butter which he helps himself to. But I find for me protein is more filling, so perhaps some cubes of cheese and crackers, rolled up slices of ham, or make a Spanish omelette and cut into strips - good cold for nibbling. Fruit to finish if still required.
I agree about the cereal bars, they are not filling at all, and expensive if they end up having 2-3 snacks.
It's worth designating a snack time, where they sit and have something, plus a glass of milk perhaps. Eating while doing something else isn't good for the brain to realise you've been fed, if that makes sense.
It's a good time to think about it, before the summer holidays - check out those offers on big blocks of cheese!!!Bossymoo

Scandinavian kids are filled up with a couple of things when they're hungry between meals the first is called 'Fruit Porridge' and is fruit compote usually summer berries, (whatever you happen to have) gently stewed and sweetened with some honey and thickened with cornflour. This is served cold and sometmes with plain yoghurt and the second is really simple and really healthy and it's plain uncooked porridge oats, served with raspberries, strawberries and/or redcurrants with lashings of skimmed milk and a drizzle of honey. Both are real hunger stoppers even for those younglings with hollow legs!!!0

If giving fruit, I find bananas fill up more efficiently than other fruits, especially with milk (soya milk for us) to help stave off hunger. A few cubes of cheese helps too.
You can buy large bags of basic/essential/value fruit and nuts which would fill them up better than crisps or sweets but have a similar nibble element.
Flapjacks or muffins if making a bake are good economical choices. You can make savoury muffins, rather than giving them extra sugar. Or scones, either savoury ones or fruits ones without any added sugar - plain scones with dried fruit added are more usual than sweetening the dough. Plain scones with sultanas to have with a drink make my kids feel like they have had something cakey and sweet.Love and compassion to all x0 -

Ah braces will surely effect what he can eat, at least until he gets used to them. Are they the fixed ones? Have a word with the dentist and get some advice - my cousin has just had hers removed but the first couple of months she lost quite a bit of weight as she got used to what was comfortable to eat (and didn't stick!)Bossymoo
