Checking N.I contributions

I have just filled in an application form and on it it said that they would check the N.I contributions, did I agree with that. Of course I had to agree but I am wondering how do they check that and why do they want to check it?

Application form for what?
Employers can't just "check NI contributions".0 -
It;s an application form for Toys r Us.0

As part of the normal recruitment process Toys R Us undertakes checks on credit references, National Insurance Contributions and electoral roll details. Please confirm your agreement to this process.
I spoke to someone today and he said that yes any company could check the National insurance contribution of someone if they have your national insurance number.0 -
