Car Insurance Debt

I bought a car in december 2013 and at the beginning of February I had an accident.. The insurance quote was originally 1100 and I paid monthly installments. I had 2 years NCB and sent them it but to the wrong email.

After the car was fixed, they cancelled my policy because I didnt send them my NCB certificate.

I told them I sent them my NCB certificate on the specific date etc and they said yes they received it but it was to the wrong department so they knew about it. So they cancelled my policy and demanded me to pay the rest of the premium which worked out to be £900 and I also had to pay £950 excess.. So they insured me for 2 months yet I need to pay the rest of the 10 months which is really unfair as I paid out £1850 for 2 months.

Now theres a debt collection letter coming through demanding me to pay the stated amout. What can I do about it? Seems like a bit of a scam as they knew they received the NCB certificate but because it was the wrong department then it doesnt count.. (I sent it through email btw)

What can I do about this?

the monthly installments are a form of credit, if the policy is discontinued you still owe the money - because you have made a claim, you won't even get a partial refund.

You will also now have great difficulty getting insurance at all and it will be very expensive, other insurers don't like to take on people who have had a policy cancelled for whatever reason.

You can try and make a complaint about the fact that you sent your NCB to them but to wrong address. What are the dates your policy started, you sent your cert in and you had the accident.

This may be a whole heap of trouble for you sorry to say.

I sent them the NCB certificate in mid January. They received it but it was not the department dealing with it as I sent it to the wrong email and they KNEW about it. Yet just cancelled my insurance because it was the wrong department.

    Policy started around 18/12/13.
The certificate was sent actually sent on 22/01/14
    Accident took place on 10/02/14
    Policy cancelled roughly 27/02/14

Was the car written off? (I don't think it was but just checking)

I think what has happened is that they have reviewed your policy following the accident, possibly when they got the bill, and cancelled it for lack of proof of NCD.

How do you know they knew you had sent the cert to the wrong email address? Have you had that discussion with them.

tbh I think this is probably worth complaining to the Financial Ombudsman if you can't get any further, especially given the potential consequences for you.

If they won't budge, ask them verbally and follow up in writing for a "letter of deadlock so that you can make complaint to the FOS" - it might just make them think again if they know you are going to do that.

    Hope that helps a little.

It seems to me like a pretty poor excuse to cancel a policy because of an incorrect email address.
Especially when it was sent to the right company, just the wrong dept.
Definitely a written complaint is called for, and if necessary take it to the ombudsman, if what you say is true, you stand a good chance of having any complaint upheld.

You must be quick though as time limits apply to these things.

The car was not written off.

When I called them to ask why the policy was cancelled and they said because we didnt receive the NCB certificate but when I gave them the date I sent it and my email address, they said yes we received it but it was the wrong department.

So they knew about it. Just the wrong department and they said they cant reinstate a policy that has been cancelled.

Sorry for a late reply, been at work all day.

    Thanks for your advice guys!

Why did you send the NCB proof 30 days after inception of policy?
