Almost all my furniture/sofa and beds were bought new from Argos when they have offers on. OK its not the best quality but it is functional enough and does not look too cheap or chatty. You could easily furnish your whole house and have change from a grand.

I know I don't need NEW furniture, but we have had second hand for 10 years, I am a firm believer of buy cheap buy often, buy good quality buy once, I intend to pass our furniture to our children. Our sofas were second hand are 10 years old with huge rips in, the do need to be new really.

Buy good 2nd hand stuff then. If it's going to last generations it doesn't matter if it's already a generation old. You'll probably find good quality stuff in charity shops for less than you can get cheap stuff new in furniture shops. In order to get anything that isn't chipboard and veneer you're going to blow your budget to pieces.

So spend your time looking for good used stuff (charity shops, boot sales, gumtree, ebay, etc) and pick them up as you can afford them. You've been using old stuff for a while so you'll be alright to continue upgrading as you can afford to, there's really no reason to do it all at once especially if you need to borrow at poor rates to do so.

If you can't get a personal loan, you can try using a P2P lending site, and see if you get a lower rate than what you would get with a credit card.
