Mortgage application - proof of freehold

Hello.
Just finished my mortgage application with YBS and they have asked me to get proof that the house is freehold. I asked the estate agent to get this from the vendor's solicitor but she was confused and said she hadn't heard of a lender asking for this before. Is this normal?

Neither have I - not even from Leeds who are prone to some of the more lunatic requests.
Usually the lender and/or their surveyor and/or the solicitor do this as part of their due diligence process.
Never mind - Go to the land registry (http://eservices.landregistry.gov.uk/www/wps/portal/!ut/p/b1/04_Sj9CPykssy0xPLMnMz0vMAfGjzOKNjSxMDA1NjDwsjM3MDTxN3dyNDUNMjQ1MjPWDU_P0C7IdFQG9k5Tz/) and spend £3 on the Title Register document (which is exactly what they do anyway)Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Done that! Will print it off and take it to them tomorrow!0

Don't they normally ask the solicitor to check this with the Land Registry. This is why the solicitor charges you for 'Office Copies'0

Sounds bizarre, I've never heard of lenders insisting on seeing the title deeds (which is the only way you'd prove it!) at application stage. I wonder if their staff have misunderstood something.0
