Caramel Highlights.

I'm usually very good with hair dye and knowing what works but I just can't figure this out!
My hair is currently pretty much block dyed medium brown and its boring and the colour is very flat, I want highlights but not blonde so decided on caramel, however quotes I've had at salons are in excess of £100 which I just don't have and don't think I will have for a good few months yet so I'm going to attempt it myself first, if all goes wrong I'll just have to go over it with brown....again...
So, I've bought this:

On the back it says that brown hair should go a light browny-caramely colour (obviously that being if thats the natural colour and state of your hair) but do you think its achievable this way or will it just go orange? Or not do anything at all?
The only reason I bought this one is because it has a comb attachment for the developer bottle so I can essentiall brush it through rather than getting out my foils and mixing bowl!

You may be better off trying a highlighting kit rather than an all over box dye - I've used the Garnier ones before and there are different kits for different coloured hair

I've tried that before and whenever I've then dyed over the bleach, its gone back t medium brown, evn with a honey blonde dye!! Its like my hair is determined to be brown and nothing else!0 -
Could you for the future, think about getting your hair done at a local college. I have dark blonde/light brown hair, but anytime Ive attempted to colour it myself, its been disastrous. I dont try and lighten it myself, my hair just doesnt react well with shop bought colours. I always get it done professionally. I had my hair done earlier in the year and it was far too blonde. I went to the college, they darkened my hair back to its natural colour and then put some highlights through the top. Ive been twice now and its cost me £10 per time and theyve done as good a job if not better than some salons Ive been to.
I know most colleges will be winding down for the summer which doesnt help you just now, but there are colleges that have commerical salons in them and there are also often training salons out in the high street.0 -
I've done the ombre in blonde on my hair fine, its just highlights that are my downfall.
I once went to a salon that had a newly qualified girl doing my highlights and she used the wrong bleach on my scalp and burnt my head, I had to go to the hospital and see a trichologist and that has put me off colleges and even salons to be honest. I know the majority are amazing at colouring but its a lottery until you find one.0 -

The girls at the college I go to are very well supervised. They take a lot of care, more care than salons, because they are doing the hair colour and cuts for their portfolio.
There are tutors on site the entire time. Ive never ever had a bad experience in a salon, apart from colours I havent wanted, I understand why you would be wary
The girl who did my hair last told me that colours cost about 7 pounds for them to buy, so some salons are making a hell of a lot of profit0
