CV and job search question (change of industry)

I'm hoping and would be grateful if the good members here can give me some advice.

Unfortunately my job (account manager) was made redundant last December after 13 years. I couldn't move to a rival company as I don't have the relevant experience, as my knowledge was effectively made defunct by a change in legislation.

I think partly because of the timing and possibly my age it took me 4 months to find another position in a totally different industry. I had my doubts when I took the new job (lack of clarity mainly), but obviously had to take a chance. Unfortunately I gave my all but that hasn't worked out (I was unhappy as there was little support, the employer expected me to hit the ground running) and 2 months later I'm unemployed again. I'm not a graduate and haven't any vocational qualifications I' afraid.

1/ Should I leave this period of employment OFF my CV? I'm all for being honest and there are genuine reasons why it didn't work ie I didn't throw my toys about. I don't want it to look as I've done nothing in the last 6 months, and am wary it will take the same time to find another role. On the other hand does it put off potential employers?

2/ I have been employed in sales roles previously, but things are that cut throat now I don't want to find myself failing again. I need to build my confidence. I'm now looking at support roles (call centre, helpdesk etc), to gain experience and progress in a different industry again, but don't appear to be making headway and can't engage with any agencies (maybe I'm not an easy placement?). Will employers be put-off that I want to take a step back for long term gain? I'm a loyal employee and wouldn't be looking to jump ship at the next best offer if I'm happy.

I'm searching for jobs daily and applying for anything suitable, but don't want to be told in 4 months time that I was wasting my time as employers would be unwilling to give me a chance.

Have you tried voluntary work? It will update your skills, get you experience and a great reference after a bad one.

In answer to point 1, you can leave what you want off your CV, although be prepared to answer questions on it - was it through an agency, or were you employed directly?

In answer to point 2, there are a lot of people out there with NVQs and experience within support roles, so you are going up against people who have what you don't and can hit the ground running - perhaps either a training course (I'm sure vision2learn do a free customer care one, and I think ALISON do one too.) and/or voluntary work could definitely help your chances.
  • Thanks, the job was through an agency. They completed mis-represented the role (big surprise), but to be fair those that interviewed me were far from honest regarding the role/situation either. Regarding my original post is it better to be up front?

I do have a lot of experience in support roles, however that was 10 years ago, although my recent roles retained a big element of the same duties. Thank you for the info on courses.
