I've just been catching up on this thread after a few days away. And I wrote a big long post about Ceridwen's book by John Yeoman and the computer crashed when I hit the "post" button. Grrr.

I enjoyed this book and have recently finished rereading it. I don't agree with everything but like a lot of what he says. He has tried a lot of the things he advocates, which I like. Anyone else read this book? I've read his gardening books too.

    down---to---earth

Just noticed I said great three times. :) Great stuff.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

    thanks AussieLass

I've also just been checking out the blog - nice one. I'll go back at some point and check out the others she lists.

Quick comment for Hester (thinking of your UK blogs you like - and we have a dire shortage of). I noticed

    www.isabellainthe21stcentury.blogspot.com

on the above blog - had a quick glance and will go back for read (at a quick glance - think its a woman recreating Mrs Beeton for modern times!). I guess many of us feel like we live in the wrong century sometimes - personally I wonder at times how come I wandered off from the 23rd century back to this one - only joking (senility not setting in yet - I think!).

Must rev myself up to a couple of bits of overdue housework now - dont feel up to going out somewhere nice (which was the plan) - as I'm having a bit of a "feeling weak and shaky" mode I occasionally get at present (nuisance!) - so will push myself to do that and then look a bit for a solution to current little thingie.

"Current little thingie" being I need a new carpet for the main area of my house - and anticipate finally having the money for it at some point in next few months. Wondering how to avoid the "nasty chemical" bit happening again that I got when I bought a new carpet a few months ago for one of the rooms in my house and its still off-gassing now - I've got window open and fans going mad trying to remove last of the chemical fumes. Wish the floor in main area was good enough to just strip the wood down and do without carpeting - but all the floors in my house are too bad to do without some form of covering (all suggestions welcome - but this particular bit of floor has huge gaps between the wood planking and bits of hardboard patching it and is very uneven - and I gather it would cost a fortune to just rip out the floor and have new wood planks laid down).

    Hi Ceridwen

It's worth getting a quote about this - I thought the same but when I got quotes the difference wasn't too big (can't remember the figures). It depends on whether you would go for expensive durable carpet if it's the main area - the wood might work out cheaper/similar in that case.

  • Hi All

Great thread and some great blogs. It's took me ages to read everything! I'm a long time lurker on this board and have just started posting.

Being frugal is a way of life for us now so that we can achieve our dream of moving to Portugal. It's been the OS board that's taught us everything and we've gone from overspenders to underspenders in the last 12 months thanks to this forum.

I'm not sure if we can live on £6,000 a year but we can definitely live below our means.

Thank you all for all your help so far :T

    Hi MovetoPortugal

Was just about to say - can we all come for a holiday (we'll help decorate whilst we're there to earn our keep honest ....in between the siestas and glasses of wine and more siestas and glasses of wine?!) - but then I noticed target date is 2012!

Well thats another bright idea down the pan!

All bright ideas and notification of good blogs welcome! Think I might just take a look with the useful tool Pandora123 came up with recently of Google Blogs for owt else - when I've studied the Australian ones.

Hmmmm.... wonder if theres any European or Scandinavian ones written in English? Might have a little tryout requesting German ones.

(right thats the end of my coffeebreak - back to kick myself into action again on some more overdue housework).
