Nebosh Training

Does anyone have experience of doing the Nebosh Diploma via distance/online learning?

I took my general cert and H&W certs day release at a local college and really enjoyed it (am such a geek - I LOVED being back in the classroom). Got distinctions for both of those so feel I have a good understanding of the basics.

I can be motivated and do enjoy studying so I think I could stick with it, I'm just concerned about whether I'd fully understand the work without other people to discuss things with.

Am also concerned about the timescales - the online provider I spoke to this morning enters you for all 4 assessments on consecutive days . When I've looked into doing this previously I always thought I'd take a unit at a time and spread the exams/practical out more.

Am also not really working in the right place anymore. I was in a H&S role then moved sideways in the company due to redundancy and office relocation. I'm now in Occ Health and want to get back into safety but not sure how to go about it.

This is a bit rambly... sorry! Any advice please - on the training or where to look for jobs?

Both ROSPA and the British Safety Council do NEBOSH Dips online.

Get on Linkedin its a good place to get picked up for roles I have had several meetings/interviews etc from there. The only thing to be wary of is that some companies are a bit sniffy about online learning (had an interview with a HSE Director who mentioned it several times)

There are also several NEBOSH groups on linkedin that you can get advice from.

I don't understand the logic of the highlighted comment.

Irrespective of how or where you did your 'learning', the exam itself is the same for everyone and every candidate has to achieve the same requirements in the exam.

My take on H&S qualifications is that it is difficult to be a specialist on every element of H&S - the subject is just too broad.

For example, I would defy anyone who has never worked in construction who passes a generic NEBOSH qualification to walk onto a building site and ensure all elements of the CDM regs and other safety legislation is managed effectively.

Having worked in manufacturing, logistics, engineering and catering prior to making a career change to H&S , I am very comfortable interpreting legislation into those and similar types of working environments.

Although the principles of controlling hazards and managing risks are universal, having had limited experience in the construction industry, I would not attempt to manage the safety of a construction site - even though I would have a certificate to suggest that I would be qualified to do so.

I would not compromise my integrity or the safety of construction workers by suggesting I could.

I have seen many 'Safety Professionals' who have never worked on a shop floor and quite frankly, without having ever worked at that level, embarrass themselves when attempting to manage safety in the workplace.

They get no respect from those who they are attempting to keep safe, however, when you can speak the relevant terminology for a specific industry, trust me - people will listen and more importantly, you won't get people attempting to bull$hit you.

This is not suggesting that those who embark on a H&S career without experience at a shop floor level cannot make a successful career in H&S - but from personal experience - it certainly is a massive advantage.

This was my recent experience personally I think you learn more from doing than you do from the courses and being disciplined enough to study and work full time says a lot about focus and time management. This director felt that the physical course was a more worthwhile qualification.

It's also been my experience that some people (not all, but some) do see qualifications earnt from distance/online learning as slightly inferior. I don't agree with that view personally but I have encountered it.

It does seem illogical as the exam is the same, no matter what the teaching/learning method.

On the job experience is of course of immense value, whatever field you're in. I've been in engineering for a long time and have plenty of shop-floor experience, and many years now of H&S experience.... just need the advanced qualifications to back it up now.... and a new job! :)

    Thanks for the replies.
