Letter from Marstons

I got 3 points and a fine for using my mobile phone whilst driving. This was back in 2008, I thought I had paid the fine but obviously I have no way of proving it now.
Got a letter from magistrates court in May saying I owed £90. Called them up and they said it was for this incident in 2008!! I told them I could have sworn I paid and they said they would look into it. Not heard anything since...
...until yesterday, letter from Marstons arrives dated 16th May and giving me until 30th May to pay them £165!!
So I went onto their site to make the payment, entered the reference number and now they want £400!
How can this keep going up? I will pay the £90, I'll even pay the £165 but £400 is just outrageous.

How did you pay?
Cash, cheque, card, PO?
Are the points on your licence?0 -
I had points, they are off now.
No idea how I paid at the time, I am not even 100% certain that I did pay although I *think* I did, its not something I would usually not pay. Plus I am sure if I hadnt paid I would have got a reminder which I didnt.
I lived in Liverpool at the time and only moved away 3 years ago. The letter last month was the first thing I remember getting and I called them right away.0 -
Surely the fine is paid, at the same time as the points are added?0
