in Credit cards
When I get my Santander credit card statement they take great care to X out the credit card number. Great you think, very security conscious, I can trust this lot.
Hang on a mo' what's this! On the pay slip there it is, my credit card number in full!!!!!
Totally ridiculous, surely there is a way of providing another number to pay into my credit card. All they need to do is to give each credit card two numbers, the credit card one for payments and another for paying in, now if someone used the paying number it wouldn't matter.

your credit card number will always be on that payment slip, as its the only way to assign the payment to your credit card - that bit of paper you have will not have start or expiry numbers, nor will it have the cvv number either - you have nothing to worry about0

If you use the pay slip, it goes to the bank. If you don't use it, you can shred it.
Apparently you can't stop the paper statements.

It's over the top "security" nonsense. The type of nonsense that pervades the finance industry and much else in modern life. It's paranoia. It's also not needed.
When I log onto my bank, my phone number (a bogus one) is in part asterisked out !!!!!!!
If you receive something in the post why should the likes of an account number be blanked out? No reason whatsoever. Your account number is all over the place. Every merchant you've used probably has a copy it, but you can't be trusted with it.0 -

Do you think most fraud comes from the postman x-raying your envelopes looking for statements, and carefully identifying and copying down your customer number?
Or do you think it's easier for most people who want that information to do some dumpster diving at companies known for not shredding till reports correctly? (Note that I didn't say "receipt", as those typically have most numbers asterisked out)0 -
Its about fraud prevention of course, if a card number is not visibile then the opportunity for fraud is reduced. If you are unable to obtain the card number then you are less likley to try and obtain the other details.
In most financial institutions they would prefer that staff dont even have access to the data that would allow fraud to be made, less fraud means more money fo the banks. If it helped, say thanks...0 -
They could always send out a blank paying in form...
But then people would complain that it's inconvenient or fill in the wrong number and demand the banks gives them the money back while it's investigated (or something equally daft).
Pay by DD, online or over the phone, shred the slip (not the statement) and live a long and happy life.

Or have an account number that's different to the card number.
I've noticed Vanquis does this. The Payee Reference for my Vanquis Direct Debit is totally different to my card number.
Some of my credit card statements show the full card number, others hide part of it.
Maybe without the CVC, expiry date and VbV or MasterCard SecureCode versification retailers burden the cost of fraud anyway?0 -
They dared to send me my card and pin in the post!
