DBS check before starting work

Options
I have worked in the education sector in administration since 2009 in four jobs all of which required an enhanced disclosure but for none of them did I have to wait for the DBS to be processed before starting work. The last one was a temp position and my DBS is dated April 2014. (I wasn't advised about registering with the new 'check' system'). I have now got a permanent position as a care home administrator but have been told I cannot start until my DBS is processed. Is this usual?

  • Depends on the company policy. I was given the go ahead in my previous jobs to start before the DBS check was processed, however the position i secured last week won't allow me to start until they have seen the certificate :(

I had to have my certificate before I could start on most if not all of my jobs, or show my current one to use before I get my new one. My DBS only takes a week now unlike months years ago.

I have not found a company who actually uses the update service, I've been signed almost a full year now and have had 3 checks done.

Our company doesn't let people start until the DBS is through any more. Been caught out a few times by people saying minor no or convictions then the DBS showing a list as long as your arm.

I think in days gone by when a CRB check could take weeks or months to arrive some employers used to allow an employee to start work. I think that is very bad practice though.

The DBS are through in no time so it shouldn't be an issue. Personally I would not be happy if someone had access to vulnerable adults or children before the employer had sight of the check.

Thanks for the responses. My previous employers have been local authorities so they may have different policies. As I have had the same address for the last 20+ years and a very recent check which I seem to recall arrived very quickly I'll just enjoy some extra time off before I start!!

well I'm still waiting...... they did a £6 barred list check which came back inconclusive - I called the DBS and this is because there may be someone with the same name and DOB and didn't really mean much -I asked what the point was - either you're on the list or you aren't??? Especially having had enhanced disclosures for 6 years. Anyway the enhanced check has been done and I am now waiting for the certificate. My new employers want to see the certificate though had I been clear on the list check I could have started - doesn't make any sense to me at all!!!
