Peripatetic worker query

Hi all,

Been reading the site for ages and l now have a query l hope someone can help with.

I've been invited to an interview for a peripatetic post...:j

The interview itself is a 2 hour drive away and l could be covering units literally from one end of the country to another.

My questions are:

a) does the employer pay for travel expenses incurred travelling between units?
b) and would the employer expect me to re locate or pay hotel bills?

I ask as the distance too great to commute every day.

To be honest l like the sound of the job, but didn't realise exactly where l would be working when l applied.

l didn't expect to be shortlisted though and now I'm thinking that maybe it woild be a good job opportunity.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

There's not really enough information to be able to answer your questions - however, I'm happy to kick off a debate! :D

If the job really is peripatetic and covers the whole country, I wouldn't have thought that your employer would require you to relocate. From their POV, it's more important that you can get to all the places you need to get to than that you are based close to the office (assuming you aren't in the office most of the time). I would expect them to pay your expenses to travel BETWEEN locations. The tax rules, as I understand them, is that one place is your designated base (this could be your home, or the office, but it's down to the employer). You are then entitled to tax relief on your travel costs over and above what it would cost you to get from your home to your base. SO if the base is the office, for example 60 miles from your home, you are entitled to tax relief on any travel you do over 60 miles each way.

I don't understand your question about the hotel. Some employers will expect you to do a hell of a lot of travel (sometimes expecting you to do this in your own time :( ) and would expect you to go from London to Manchester and back in a day, for example. But obviously if you are working in Manchester one day and York the next it is cheaper for them, as well as more efficient, to pay to put you up in a B & B than to pay 2 lots of travel. Ask them! (What's a typical week like?)

    Hope this helps!

If the driving content is so great, why aren't they providing a vehicle?
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
